About The Center

The Center for Social Gerontology (CSG) is a cross-disciplinary collaborative center seeking to make a positive difference in the lives of aging individuals and their families and communities.

Since our inception in 2013, we’ve grown beyond our initial vision to support faculty whose teaching, research and service focused on aging. The center has grown into a thriving community of faculty, students, staff, elder service providers, and older adults with a shared commitment to not only understand aging, but also to actively shape a more supportive and fulfilling experience for every stage of life.

What We Do

  • Empower Students: Providing invaluable opportunities for hands-on involvement and growth in the field of gerontology.
  • Foster Connection: Through programs like the Senior Companion Program, we build meaningful relationships that bridge generations.
  • Advance Knowledge: Our interdisciplinary minor and ongoing research initiatives illuminate the complexities of aging and drive positive change.
  • Cultivate Community: We invite you to participate in our monthly meetings and be a part of a collective effort to make a lasting difference.

Senior Companion Program

The Center is the home of the Senior Companion Program which pairs low-income older adult volunteers with older adults and people with disabilities.

If you’re 55 or older and want to share your experience and compassion, then you have what it takes to be a Senior Companion.

Interdisciplinary Minor

This minor focuses on the impacts of age on society and the impacts of age on the psychological, physical, social and economic experiences of individuals.

Graduate Programs

Georgia Southern offers two post-MSN Nurse Practitioner certificates focused on Gerontology. We also found graduate programs at other universities where you can continue your studies in gerontology and geriatric care.
