Student Perspectives
Comparing Georgia Southern to other big engineering colleges, there was more opportunity to get hands-on experience with research here. You aren’t just learning about the work, you’re actually doing the work. That’s something a lot of people don’t get at other places.
As a research assistant with the computer science department, I worked on research for fine particulate matter values and creating simple graphical user interfaces. I loved that research so much that I continued it after my position ended and further developed it into my honors thesis.
I did two co-op rotations … I worked with Heatcraft Worldwide Refrigeration and … Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation. It’s different than working in a classroom. Being in the classroom gets you in the right mindset, but actually working is a whole other world. These experiences make you more competitive when looking for a job, too, and I was really grateful for them.
[The Office of Career and Professional Development] checked on me throughout my internship and after my internship was over to make sure I had what I needed and felt supported. I am so grateful that they helped me last summer, as it was my dream internship and confirmed that working in NASCAR is what I want to do in my life.
