Advancing Research for a Sustainable Future

At the James H. Oliver, Jr. Institute for Coastal Plain Science (ICPS), we explore the unique ecosystems of Georgia’s Coastal Plain, a vast and diverse region covering southern and southeastern Georgia. This living laboratory—home to marshes, swamps, and coastal habitats—provides an unparalleled environment for scientific discovery and sustainable resource management.
Located in the heart of this ecosystem, Georgia Southern University is a hub for cutting-edge research led by faculty and students. Our work focuses on understanding the physical and biological resources of the region to develop solutions that promote environmental sustainability, economic growth, and community resilience.
About ICPS
The Institute for Coastal Plain Science (ICPS) supports Georgia Southern’s pursuit of academic distinction in teaching, research, and community service by fostering engagement that connects theory to real-world practice, extending learning beyond the classroom.
As an outreach unit of the College of Science and Mathematics, the ICPS helps develop students to work with Georgia’s communities and industries, turning scientific knowledge into economic opportunities that protect our natural resources.
To support these objectives, we partner with public and private groups to promote research and education focused on understanding and sustainably using the physical and biological resources of Georgia’s Coastal Plain. We also curate and enhance extensive natural history collections and promote them for use in research and education.
