What You’ll Learn

Construction engineers are expected to command all aspects of a project. That’s a broad set of knowledge, and the classes you take have an equally wide and varied scope. 

Required courses deliver foundational knowledge in civil engineering and then expose you to soil mechanics, materials science, construction finance, project management, safety and more. You’re also advised to develop a specialty in one of the following areas:

  • Complete our online application using the PIN you received after creating your application account.
  • Once complete, pay the $30 application fee or upload a valid fee waiver. Previous Georgia Southern applicants and dual enrollment students do not need to pay the fee.

The College of Engineering and Computing offers several scholarships earmarked solely for engineering majors. These scholarships may be awarded based on need, merit or a combination of the two.

Scholarships for Civil and Construction Engineering Students

Georgia Southern offers students several ways to accomplish their surveying-geomatics goals. As a student in the B.S. in Construction Engineering degree program, you can earn a Surveying-Geomatics certificate by completing an additional 18 hours of classes (or 148 credit hours in total.)

Construction Engineering Program Mission Statement

The mission of the Construction Engineering program is to produce graduates with a strong foundation of mathematical, scientific and technical skills who are capable of analyzing, designing and building practical engineering applications. As individuals or team members, graduates will be prepared to effectively communicate and work in a broad spectrum of construction projects. Graduates are fully aware of their ethical, social and environmental responsibilities, and do recognize the need for life-long learning and professional development. The Construction Engineering program supports the University’s mission of bridging theory with practice, extending the learning environment beyond the classroom, and promoting student growth and life success.

Educational Objectives

The Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) of Construction Engineering at Georgia Southern University are to prepare its graduates to:

  1. be successfully employed in Construction Engineering or a closely related field with the ability to apply principles of construction engineering and management to solve practical construction engineering problems.
  2. actively engage in professional development activities such as attaining professional licensure, participating in professional societies and pursuing continuing educational opportunities that may lead to advanced certifications.
  3. demonstrate the ability to effectively explain and justify their technical and management solutions to a range of audiences, as well as work in multidisciplinary teams with an appreciation of diverse perspectives.

Student Outcomes

Students completing the Construction Engineering program will be able to demonstrate the following outcomes:

  1. an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
  2. an ability to identify, formulate and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science and mathematics.
  3. an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental and economic factors.

  5. an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental and societal contexts.
  6. an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks and meet objectives.
  7. an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.

Completion of Georgia Southern’s Bachelor of Science programs in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering meet the educational requirements to begin the licensure process in the 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia and five U.S. territories (American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands) by providing the coursework necessary to sit for the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination. Software Engineering does not have a specific PE examination. It is typically recommended that candidates sit for their FE exam toward the end of their senior year or soon after graduation. Georgia Southern makes every effort to ensure information about educational requirements for licensure or certification is current; however, state requirements may change. Separate from educational requirements, state licensure boards may require applicants to complete professional examinations, background checks, years of professional experience, residence requirements, jurisprudence exams, training, etc. If you are planning to pursue professional licensure or certification in a state other than Georgia, it is strongly recommended that you contact the appropriate licensing entity in that state to seek information regarding licensure or certification before beginning an academic program.
