Georgia Southern has a thriving community of students with a passion for anthropology. Anthropology students get their hands dirty learning at one of three archeology sites (Camp Lawton, Mont Repose, and Fitzner). Anthropology students may also take their studies abroad, learning in places such as Botswana, Panama, and Ireland. Get involved by joining one of our two student groups (The Anthropological Society and Lambda Alpha) or taking advantage of the many opportunities to learn outside of the classroom.

Anthropological Society

The Georgia Southern Anthropological Society is a student organization open to any student interested in anthropology. Dues are $5 per semester or $10 per year. The organization sponsors guest speakers (students, professors, and off-campus visitors who report on research and lead workshops). Field trips to archeological sites and regional anthropology conferences are organized, in addition
to service, social, and fund raising activities. Officers are elected at the end of the Fall semester. Find out more about the Anthropology Society on our Facebook Page.

Lambda Alpha

Lambda Alpha is the national honors organization for anthropology. To qualify for membership, undergraduate students must:

  1. Be a junior or senior
  2. Have completed at least 20 hours in the major
  3. Have a 3.0 or better general GPA
  4. Have a 3.3 or better GPA for anthropology courses taken at Georgia Southern University

Qualified students will be invited to join Lambda Alpha in the Spring semester of each academic year. GPA will be calculated through Fall semester grades, and invitations will be extended after the Department receives these grades and reviews the standing of juniors and seniors.

The Outstanding Sociology and Anthropology Student

This annual honor is awarded to the student(s) who have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to learning, a passion for scholarship, and devotion to serving their community. The nomination and selection process is conducted by the department faculty and the recipient is announced at the Honors Day Convocation.

The Perscio Memorial Scholarship in Anthropology

The Victor, Rebecca, and Richard Perscio Scholarship in Anthropology is named in honor of the late Dr. Richard Perscio and his mother and father. Dr. Perscio was a beloved faculty in the Department and each year we honor his memory by awarding this scholarship to anthropology undergraduates who have demonstrated academic excellence, a commitment to scholarship, and the willingness to go above and beyond to serve their fellow students, the Department, and the community. The nomination and selection process is conducted by the anthropology faculty and the recipient is announced at the Honors Day Convocation.

The Dr. Lee Rogers Berger Scholarship in Anthropology

The Dr. Lee Rogers Berger Scholarship in Anthropology was established in 2012 by Dr. Lee Rogers Berger and his mother, Rose Mae Millikan. Dr. Berger graduated from Georgia Southern University in 1989 with a degree in Anthropology/Archaeology and a minor in Geology. Dr. Berger is a paleoanthropologist, physical anthropologist and archaeologist and is best known for his discovery of Australopithecus sediba, the excavation the Rising Star Cave, his work on Australopithecus africanus body proportions and the Taung Bird of Prey Hypothesis. The scholarship is available to junior and senior anthropology majors who have maintained a 3.0 average. Eligible applicants must have declared their intent of graduate study or have begun the application process to seek a graduate degree in one of the following areas: Paleoanthropology, Biological anthropology, Physical anthropology, Hominin evolution, Evolutionary studies, Primate behavior, Primate studies, Faunal analysis, African zooarchaeology.

Student Spotlight

Our sociology students are some of the most active on campus. Our student group The Sociological Society is active in the community collaborating with The Boys and Girls Club and CASA, raising money for cancer research, and volunteering throughout Statesboro and beyond. Our graduates have earned internships working in the White House and working for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and many have gone on to earn advanced degrees.

Sociological Society

The Sociological Society is the student club for sociology majors, minors, and any other Georgia Southern student interested in sociology. Everyone is welcome! We are a group of highly motivated students who split our time between philanthropy/volunteering on campus in the community and discussing the sociology around us by watching documentaries, talking about current events, and learning from each other’s experiences. Are you in an Intro to Sociology course right now and want to know more about sociology and meet some like minded students? Then this club is for you. Even if you’re not a sociology major/minor, you can still dig deeper into sociology and the social issues that are affecting the world and your community today.

Alpha Kappa Delta

Alpha Kappa Delta is an International Sociology Honor Society dedicated “to investigating humanity for the purpose of service.” To qualify for membership, undergraduate students must:

  1. Must be an officially declared sociology major or demonstrate a serious interest in sociology within an official program of the host institution.
  2. Must be at least a junior (third year) by standards of the host institution.
  3. Must have accumulated the equivalent of an overall GPA of 3.3 and rank in the top 35% of their class in general scholarship.
  4. Must have maintained the equivalent of a 3.3 GPA in sociology courses taken at Georgia Southern University.
  5. Must have completed at least four regular courses in sociology prior to initiation (exclusive of extension or courses graded pass/fail).

Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) is the International Sociology Honor Society. AKD was founded in 1920 at the University of Southern California by Dr. Emory S. Bogardus and became affiliated with the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS) in 1967. AKD is also affiliated with the American Sociological Society (ASA).

The purpose of Alpha Kappa Delta is to seek to acknowledge and promote excellence in the scholarship in the study of sociology, the research of social problems, and such other social and intellectual activities as will lead to improvement in the human condition.

Alpha Kappa Delta is a non-secret, democratic, international society of scholars dedicated to the ideal of Athropon Katamannthanein Diakonesin or “to investigate humanity for the purpose of service.”

There is a governing body of elected sociologists who are Alpha Kappa Delta members and who serve as our Council Members and Regional Representatives. There is also a central Executive Office located in Syracuse, NY at Le Moyne College where an Executive Director, Finance Officer, and several student employees are employed.

Alpha Kappa Delta has a quarterly journal, Sociological Inquiry, which is currently published by Wiley-Blackwell. Sociological Inquiry is committed to the exploration of the human condition in all of its social and cultural complexity. New members receive one free year of Sociological Inquiry provided they turn in an activation form. All members who renew their memberships receive a year of the journal. Sociological Inquiry is available in both print and online.

Internships

An internship is an opportunity for students to gain practical hands-on experience by working for an organization, company, government agency, or non-profit. Internships allow students to explore potential career paths, bolster their resumes/CVs, strengthen their applications to graduate school and enhance their employability.

Anthropology Internships

Anthropology internships are coordinated by the anthropology internship coordinator, Dr. Jennifer Sweeney Tookes. Students work with Dr. Sweeney Tookes to procure and complete internships relevant to the discipline that fit with their interests and ultimate career directions. Previous anthropology interns have engaged in a wide range of experiences, such as: assisting with a Citizen Farmers Academy; engaging with the Willow Hill Heritage and Renaissance Center; work in the Georgia Bureau of Investigations morgue; research assistant to a project on tourism in Argentina, and in-office experiences in a local law firm in Statesboro. Anthropological approaches and perspectives are productive in a wide range of locations, so students are encouraged to think creatively about internship sites and projects.

Sociology Internships

Sociology majors work with Dr. April Schueths, the sociology internship coordinator, to find an internship opportunity that suits their professional interests and meets their specific needs. Recent sociology graduates have taken internships with organizations serving children (e.g., CASEGA & Behavioral Pediatrics of Rural Georgia), working with mental healthcare providers (e.g. Pineland Mental Health & Coastal Harbor Behavioral Health), legal offices, human resource departments, and even The White House. After their internship experience, many of our recent students have been able to secure employment at the place they interned or a similar organization.
