Wednesday, Oct. 16, 5:30 p.m., Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum, Savannah

The Moveable Feast lecture series is back! The first lecture of the semester is by Dr. Joyce White, titled Black Mermaids: Diving into the Deep. It will be held at the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum in Savannah on Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Lecture description: Utilizing ancient concepts of water and water spirits, this lecture will provide a literary and historical lens of Black Mermaids and examine the ways Black Mermaids function in societal understanding of identity.

Joyce White is Assistant Professor of English in Gullah Geechee Literature and Cultures at Georgia Southern University. She received her Ph.D. in Humanities with a primary focus in African American Studies from Clark Atlanta University and earned a BA and MA in English, with a focus in Creative Writing and literature, from Florida State University. Her research interests include 19th, 20th, and 21st century African American and diasporic literature, as well as African cosmological and spiritual continuities in diasporic literature.
