Getting Started in the GEM Program

Step 1: Log into the Air Force Portal to View GEM schools and Approved Courses

• Log into the Air Force Portal and select Air Force Virtual Education Center (AFVEC)
• Select “GEM Program” and search for approved GEM schools
• Find “Georgia Southern University” to see the list of approved online courses

Step 2: Admission to Georgia Southern University

• Complete the Admissions Application
• You will also need to provide a Transient Student Command Approval Form signed by your Education Services Advisor/Manager
• Complete all applicable in-state tuition and mandatory fee waivers found on the Admissions Checklist tab on this page
• Send all documents to Military and Veteran Services Attn: GEM – mvs@georgiasouthern.edu

Step 3: Create your CCAF Goal and Apply for and Submit Tuition Assistance (TA) Authorization

• Log into the Air Force Portal, select AFVEC and click on “Education Goals” to create your CCAF Goal
• Once your CCAF Goal has been created, apply for Air Force Tuition Assistance in AFVEC
• When prompted to give Georgia Southern’s OPEID, enter 00154600 (TA Authorization can be submitted 45 days before the first day of class but must be submitted no later than 7 days prior to the first day of class)
• Once your TA is approved, email a copy to the Georgia Southern University Third-Party Billing office at mvs@georgiasouthern.edu

Step 4: Register for Classes

• Log into MyGeorgiaSouthern to access your student account and register for classes
• Review the GEM Admissions Checklist to make sure you have completed all enrollment and registration steps

GEM Admissions Checklist

General Education Mobile (GEM) is a partnership between the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) and Georgia Southern University to offer general education courses to satisfy up to 15 hours of credit. The Department of Military & Veteran Services are available on-site to provide guidance, assistance, and referrals to additional on and off-campus services.

• Complete the Admissions Application
• Download and complete the CCAF Transient Student Command Approval to Enroll
• Upon admission, complete the Petition for In-State Tuition and Out-of-State Waiver Intake Form (if applicable) and the Military Mandatory Fee Only Waivers
• Provide a copy of your Military ID
• Send all documents to Georgia Southern mvs@georgiasouthern.edu
• Review Tuition and Fees rates for the upcoming semester

Written Communication

• ENGL 1101 Composition I: 3 semester credit hours                       
• ENGL 1102 Composition II(must have ENGL 1101 & passed with C or better): 3 semester credit hours

• MATH 1101 Introduction to Mathematical Modeling: 3 semester credit hours
• MATH 1111 College Algebra: 3 semester credit hours
• MATH 1112 College Trigonometry:3 semester credit hours
• MATH 1113 Pre-Calculus Mathematics: 3 semester credit hours
• MATH 1441 Calculus I: 4 semester credit hours              

Social Science

• ANTH 1102 Introduction to Anthropology: 3 semester credit hours
• ECON 2105 Principals of Macroeconomics: 3 semester credit hours                     
• GEOG 1130 World Regional Geography: 3 semester credit hours
• HIST 1112 World History II: Emergence of Modern Global Community: 3 semester credit hours
• HIST 2110 U.S. A Comprehensive Survey: 3 semester credit hours
