Need a Recommendation? Let’s Plan Ahead!
TRIO Student Support Services can provide a recommendation to support your application for a job, internship, professional or social organization or for your admission to graduate school or a professional program.
To give your recommendation request the best chance, please give us at least 30 days’ notice. We understand things come up, but 15 days is our absolute minimum. TRIO Student Support Services can provide a recommendation to support your application for a job, internship or professional or social organization, but academic recommendations (like for scholarships, professional programs and graduate schools) get priority. For research-focused programs, you should also include your professors or other faculty who can attest to your research experience. Remember, having a few potential recommenders lined up is always a good idea!
Important: Submitting a request doesn’t guarantee a recommendation, but it gives you time to find another option if needed.

About the TRIO Program
Overview
Georgia Southern University’s Armstrong/Liberty Student Support Services Project is a U.S. Department of Education TRIO Program and is 100% supported from 2020-2025 in Federal funds each year.
Through a grant competition, funds are awarded to institutions of higher education to provide opportunities for academic development, assist students with basic college requirements, and to motivate students toward the successful completion of their post-secondary education. Nationally, TRIO has over 1,080 Student Support Services programs that serve over 205,000 students.
The SSS program provides comprehensive services to first-generation students, low-income students, and students with disabilities. The primary goal of SSS is to help transition, retain, and graduate students at Georgia Southern. Through our services, we provide opportunities for academic development, assist with college requirements, and serve to motivate students toward the successful completion of their undergraduate degree program.
History
The history of TRIO is progressive. Upward Bound (UB), the first of the TRIO programs, began as a pilot project authorized by the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 to encourage low-income youths to complete high school and prepare for college. A year later, Talent Search (TS) was created as part of the Higher Education Act of 1965 to assist students applying for newly authorized federal financial aid for postsecondary education.
The TRIO name itself was born four years later when the Higher Education Act of 1965 was amended in 1968 to include the Special Services for Disadvantaged Students program—what is now called Student Support Services (SSS). Upward Bound, Talent Search and Student Support Services formed a trio of federal programs designed to foster increased educational opportunity and attainment. Upward Bound and Talent Search focused on college preparation and admission, while Student Support Services helped eligible students stay in college until they earned a college degree.
Ask for help. Find mentorship wherever you can. Build relationships with other students who are committed to excelling academically. Have the audacity to dream big. Because a day will come when what makes you different, will be your competitive advantage.
