Certification

The Office of Curriculum, Instruction and Initial Educator Preparation processes all of the necessary paperwork for candidates who are applying for initial certification or who are adding fields to existing certificates in Georgia.  We also process applications for candidates who are applying for out-of-state positions.  It is the responsibility of the applicant to submit a complete application with all supporting documentation.  Please carefully check each item before submitting your application to be sure it is complete.

Applicants must meet all requirements before their applications are submitted to the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GAPSC).  Here is the link to the GAPSC:  www.gapsc.com

Certification Documents

Pre-Service Certification

The Pre-Service certificate is intended for educator candidates completing field experiences or student teaching in Georgia schools. It must be requested on behalf of the candidate by the college, university, or other institution providing the educator preparation program.

This certificate is for individuals who will be participating in field experiences or student teaching in Georgia schools on or after July 1, 2015.

  • Be admitted to an educator preparation program that leads to Induction certification in a teaching field;
  • Have a successful criminal record check (conducted by the GaPSC);
  • Complete the GACE Educator Ethics AssessmentPlease note: completion of this assessment is not required for candidates who enrolled in educator preparation programs prior to July 1, 2014.
  • Have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA
  • Purchase liability insurance – the PAGE organization is one option, here’s the link:  www.pageinc.org

The Pre-Service certificate is valid for as many as 5 years, and may be extended at the request of the educator preparation provider. It is invalidated upon program completion, or if the candidate withdraws, transfers, or is removed from the program. A former candidate who re-enrolls in an educator preparation program may be issued a new 5-year Pre-Service certificate at the request of the provider. A current background check is required in this case.

  • The Pre-Service certificate is not a professional educator certificate. It allows the holder to participate in supervised field experience, clinical practice, student teaching, or residency work in Georgia schools;
  • Holding a Pre-Service certificate does not automatically lead to Induction educator certification. Requirements for the Induction certificate may be found here.
  • Holding a Pre-Service certificate is not a pre-requisite to qualify for any other Georgia certificate.

TEACH Grant

The College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007 created the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program that provides up to $3,772 (which is a $4,000 grant minus a 5.7% sequester amount of $228 if disbursed on or after October 1, 2020 and before October 1, 2025) per year in grants to students who intend to teach full-time in high-need subject areas for at least four years at schools that serve students from low-income families.

Teaching Obligation

In exchange for receiving the TEACH Grant, you must agree to (Teach Grant Service Obligation):

  • Serve as a full-time highly-qualified teacher for four elementary or secondary school years at a school or educational service agency (ESA) that serves low-income students;
  • Teach in a high-need field; and
  • Complete the required four years of teaching within eight years after you graduate from or otherwise cease to be enrolled at the institution of higher education where you received your TEACH Grants.
  • If you do not meet the requirements of your service obligation, all TEACH Grants you received will be converted to Direct Unsubsidized Loans. You must repay these loans in full, with interest charged from the date of each TEACH Grant disbursement.

Failure to complete the teaching obligation, or respond to request for information, or properly document your teaching service will cause the TEACH Grant to be permanently converted to a loan with interest. As soon as the grant is converted to a loan, it cannot be converted back to a grant.
