David Williams, Ph.D., joined Georgia Southern in 1990 as an associate professor in the B.S. in Manufacturing program, and as graduate director of the Master of Technology degree program. As the industrial technology programs were phased out, Dr. Williams transitioned to teach in the area of Materials Science, Materials Processing, and Occupational Safety and Environmental Compliance in the Mechanical Engineering Technology program. Upon approval by the USG Board of Regents for Georgia Southern to offer engineering degrees in 2011, in addition to his faculty responsibilities in the newly formed Department of Mechanical Engineering, he was appointed interim Associate Dean. Upon formation of the Allen E. Paulson College of Engineering and Computing, Dr. Williams was appointed as Associate Dean for Students and Curriculum.
As Associate Dean for Students and Curriculum, Dr. Williams’s responsibilities are for academic and student affairs. He provides curricular leadership for undergraduate, graduate, online and certificate programs. Dr. Williams oversees enrollment management, course offerings and scheduling, grade appeals, curriculum changes and approvals for all of the College’s programs. Working closely with students, academic advisors, academic department chairs, and faculty, he promotes student success at all levels.
Background
Dr. Williams holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Industrial Education and Technology from Appalachian State University. He earned his Ph.D. in Industrial, Technological, and Occupational Education from the University of Maryland (UMD). In addition to his academic appointments, Williams has engaged in collaborative projects with the National Public Service Research Institute (NPSRI), the A. James Clark College of Engineering at UMD, the Southeast Center for Assistive Technology, the Center for Interactive Learning to develop instructional and training materials for ISO 9000, and the Safety Education Centers at Appalachian State and UMD. Williams also served as the Chair of the Board of Accreditation for the National Association of Industrial Technology (now ATMAE).
