The graduate school library media certificate will train you for various educational roles developing and managing school libraries. The school librarian plays a vital role in the school, helping to support teachers, develop literacy efforts, improve access to media resources and nurture a love for reading. 

Georgia Southern’s school library certification program will help you build the expertise in literacy, technology and media to lead school library programs and advance your career. Our program is fully online and easy to fit into your existing schedule so that you can pursue your certificate while still maintaining your career. 

The school library media certificate program is open to students who already hold a master’s degree, but a teaching certification is not required.

What Can You Do With a School Library Media Certificate?

A graduate-level school library media certificate qualifies you to work in school libraries or in various educational publishing or educational technology companies. 

The most common roles for this certification include school librarian or library media specialist in P-12 schools, but you may also work as an information literacy specialist, educational technology specialist, library program coordinator, library consultant and more.

What You’ll Learn

The  program will begin with an introduction to the functions of the school library media center and the various responsibilities of library media specialists. You’ll broaden your knowledge of children’s and adolescent literature, while exploring the design of learning strategies for all students, including those with diverse needs.

You’ll study digital tools and resources, information fluency, literacy, instructional design, leadership and more. Your studies will conclude with a school library practicum, where various experiences will allow you to apply your knowledge and skills in preparation for taking your certification exam.

Follow these steps to complete the Georgia Southern application: 

  • Visit our website for the College of Graduate Studies. Complete the requested information and create a login name and password.
  • Follow this link and initiate an on-line application. The cost for the application is $50. After completing this on-line form, the application must be supported by transcripts, GRE scores, two letters of recommendation, and a statement of your career goals and research interests. International students should submit scores from the TOEFL exam (Test of English as a Foreign Language), and have transcripts evaluated by World Education Services (WES).

Admission Requirements

  1. Complete requirements for a master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  2. Candidates may or may not possess a teaching certificate:
    1. Candidates who possess or are eligible for a renewable Georgia level four teaching certificate; or who possess an equivalent out-of-state certificate should submit a copy of their certification. Candidates who have completed all requirements for the Georgia level four teaching certificate have until the end of the first semester to obtain the certificate. Candidates with an out-of-state certificate will not receive Georgia certification upon program completion.
    2. Candidates may also pursue this program without prior Georgia certification as initial certification in Georgia.
  3. Present a cumulative 2.50 (4.0 scale) grade point average or higher on all undergraduate and graduate work combined.
  4. Submit a completed “Disclosure and Affirmation Form” that addresses misconduct disclosure, criminal background check, the Code of Ethics for Educators, and tort liability insurance.

*International transcripts must be evaluated by a NACES accredited evaluation service and must be a course by course evaluation and include a GPA. (naces.org)

*The application and all ​​required documents listed on the “admissions requirements” tab​ for the program must be received by the deadline.  If all required documents are not received by the deadline your application will not be considered for admission.

Apply as a Graduate Student

The Department of Leadership, Technology, and Human Development anticipates that graduates of the Certificate program in School Library Media will be eligible to seek professional certification by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission as a certified teacher/leader in School Library Media.  Visit the Georgia Professional Standards Commission for more information.

The department has not determined whether these programs satisfy the requirements of all states and territories for a professional certification in School Library Media.  Check the requirements of your state or territory using the link provided.

For all Online Programs:
