What You’ll Learn

Courses in statistics and research methods lay the foundation for in-depth engagement with literature in curriculum and instructional development. You’ll also explore effective leadership strategies, the dynamics of teaching and learning in diverse contexts, and the role of technology in the classroom.

Through the lens of your certification area, you’ll immerse yourself in the latest trends and issues in education research and pedagogy. In the final capstone, you’ll identify a significant problem of practice and develop a targeted solution with the tools you’ve acquired.

Elementary Education (Grades P-5)

The Ed.S. in Teaching and Learning program is open to those with a master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 (on a 4.0 scale) on all graduate coursework.

You must also possess or be eligible for a Georgia Level 5 teaching certificate in your chosen concentration area or possess an equivalent out-of-state certificate. 

Candidates who have completed all requirements for the Georgia Level 5 teaching certificate have until the end of the first semester to obtain the certificate. Candidates with an out-of-state certificate will not receive Georgia certification upon program completion.

To apply, please submit:

  • An online application. (There is a $50 nonrefundable application fee.)
  • A statement of purpose, no more than 200 words, that identifies your reasons for pursuing graduate study and how admission into this program relates to your professional aspirations. Please submit to gasc@georgiasouthern.edu.
  • A completed “Disclosure and Affirmation Form” that addresses misconduct disclosure, the Code of Ethics for Educators and tort liability insurance. (This is included within the online application.)

Application Deadline

Students are admitted to begin the program in the fall or summer. The application deadlines are:

Fall – July 1

Summer – April 1

Your application and all required documents must be received by the deadline.

Provisional Admission

Applicants may be approved for provisional admission based on the quality of the admission material presented. Provisional students must earn grades of “B” or higher in their first nine hours of coursework after admission and meet any other stipulations outlined by the Department to be converted to regular status.

The Ed.S. in Teaching and Learning program is approved by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) as a program leading to a Georgia Level 6 certificate upgrade for candidates with a Georgia Level 5 certificate in elementary education, middle grades education, secondary education or special education.

The College of Education anticipates that graduates of the Teaching and Learning Ed.S. program will seek a state certification upgrade. The program listed above leads to a Georgia Certificate Upgrade only. Visit the Georgia Professional Standards Commission for more information.
