Equip Yourself for Success
A good mission plan starts with the right resources. Below you will find resources to help you navigate your first semesters at Georgia Southern.
Get Waivers on Fees and Out-of-State Tuition
Georgia Southern offers waivers on application fees and mandatory fees for our active-duty, veteran and military-connected population. We’ll also waive the residency requirement so you can qualify for in-state tuition rates.
Get Credit for Your Military Experience
Many Service members are eligible for college course credit at Georgia Southern based on knowledge already gained during their time in service.
Determine Your Funding Eligibility
If you’re a current or former member of the US military, you and your family have access to some of the best education assistance programs in the country. Explore a wide range of benefits below in our Virtual Benefits Briefing. You may even qualify for multiple benefits.
Check in With Your VA Certifying Official
The school certifying official (SCO) is responsible for ensuring that your enrollment is promptly and properly certified with the VA and for notifying the VA of any changes in your enrollment.
Sign into your MyGeorgiaSouthern portal to submit a Benefits Request form, located in the Military & Veteran Services block.
Join the Student Veterans of America
Having a team to share the journey can make all the difference. There are SVA chapters at both Statesboro Campus and Armstrong Campus and any student currently enrolled in Georgia Southern University is invited to join. This includes active duty, National Guard, Reserves, veterans, military dependents and ROTC students. It also includes students who are not military-affiliated.
Virtual Benefits Briefing
The Post-9/11 GI Bill® / Chapter 33 helps Veterans or Family to pay for some, or all, of the cost of school or training. Using the Post-9/11 GI Bill®, the VA will pay the tuition directly to the school, and send the student a monthly housing stipend based on location, along with $500 per semester (Spring and Fall) to aid in book fees. The student does not make any payments directly to the school with the Post-9/11 GI Bill®. For more information, including criteria for use, see the VA’s Post-9/11 GI Bill® website.
The Vocational Rehab and Employment (VR&E) program provides services to eligible Service members and Veterans with service-connected disabilities to help them prepare for a new career.
The Montgomery GI Bill® – Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR, Chapter 1606) provides up to 36 months of education benefits to members of the Selected Reserve. This includes the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard Reserves. It also includes the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard. Payment rates are based on enrollment status and increase every October.
If you’re a dependent spouse or child—or the surviving spouse or child—of a Veteran, you may qualify for Chapter 35 (also called Chapter 35 benefits). The DEA program provides up to 36 months of education and pays the stipend directly to the student. Children who are determined eligible have until the age of 26, and spouses have up to 10 years of eligibility, at a maximum of 36 months of benefits.
If you are currently serving in the military, you may be eligible for funding through the Department of Defense Tuition Assistance program. This program provides 16 credit hours per year of covered tuition cost.
