Science & Mathematics Focus Area

Science and Mathematics at Georgia Southern University encompasses the fields of biology, chemistry, biochemistry, geography, geology, mathematics, and physics. If exploring the physical and natural world through research, field analysis and laboratory experimentation sounds exciting to you, you have found your home. Science and Mathematics majors are also appropriate for students who later consider applying to medical professions schools such as pharmacy, dentistry, medicine, veterinary medicine, and optometry.

Students not ready to declare a specific major can choose to be in Exploratory Science & Mathematics track until they have decided on a specific science or math major. Click the button below to view the Exploratory Science & Mathematics Program Map.

Major Exploration Resources

There are two ways to view degree requirements for our majors:

Students can discuss major exploration with their academic advisor, and our Office of Career & Professional Development also has many resources to assist students with Major and Career Exploration.

Majors

Biology, BA

At the largest center for biology research and education in southern Georgia, you’ll learn relevant skills both in the classroom and via hands-on research with award-winning faculty mentors. The Bachelor of Arts in Biology program offers students flexibility of study augmented by interdisciplinary experiences acquired through minor and language requirements.

Campus: Statesboro, Armstrong

Biology, BS

The BS in Biology is an ideal stepping-stone for a variety of career opportunities or graduate studies in the applied and biological sciences. With a variety of science electives, students can tailor their degree toward specializations in molecular biology, ecology and evolution, marine biology, conservation biology, sustainability and environmental biology, or pre-med/pre-professional studies.

Campus: Statesboro, Armstrong

Biochemistry, BS

The Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry provides students with a sound background education in chemistry and will prepare students for advanced studies, entrance into professional schools, and specialized work in biochemistry. The biochemistry degree is particularly suitable for students considering careers in the Biomedical or pre-Health industries.

Campus: Statesboro, Armstrong

Chemistry, BS

Biochemistry majors study the structure, composition and chemical reactions of substances in living systems. This program of study combines student-centered classes, broad-based laboratory instruction and opportunities for research in molecular biology, immunochemistry and neurochemistry, as well as bioinorganic, bioorganic and biophysical chemistry.

Campus: Statesboro, Armstrong

Geosciences, BS

Degree programs in geosciences offer a broad education in the sciences with special depth in geology, geography and environmental science.  Students in our program work with nationally and internationally known faculty and state-of-the-art equipment in our teaching and research labs. Students gain a firm understanding of the role of science in society and are able to make informed decisions about geology- and geography-related issues that impact the future.

Campus: Statesboro, Armstrong

Mathematical Sciences, BS

Students in Georgia Southern’s bachelor’s degree program for Mathematics will be provided practical training in the areas of calculus, algebra, probability and statistics, but will also learn how to demonstrate logical arguments. Math majors are typically some of the highest performers on exams for medical, dental, business and law school.

Campus: Statesboro, Armstrong

Physics, BS

Physicists study matter, space and time. Physics majors at Georgia Southern have a unique opportunity to participate in cutting-edge research in close collaboration with our world-class faculty. Concentrations include astronomy, nanoscience and quantum information.
